Part Three

The Outcome

Fifteen

On Saturday afternoon, January 11, 1992, over at the Rippey house, Toni and Hope were crying hysterically, telling Gloria that they were witnesses to a murder. Gloria called Carl at work and said, "I think you'd better come home."

Earlier that day, Carl had stopped at his house for a few minutes. He was just passing through on his way back to the job. The four girls were all there at the time, and his son John pulled him aside and said, "Something happened to Hope. I think she saw an accident." Carl thought his son was talking about a car accident, and knowing that his daughter was so sensitive and squeamish, he didn't pay much attention to it.

When he walked in the door, Hope and Toni both started telling him bits and pieces of what happened. Carl could not believe what was being said.

"I didn't know what kind of involvement Hope had. The whole story was not expressed," he recalls. "I'm told there is a girl who has been killed and they witnessed it."

The girls told Carl that they had gone to the bowling alley and had consulted a friend there; he suggested they get a lawyer, giving them the name of a Madison attorney, Darrel Auxier. Hope told her father that she had already called him, and Carl, in disbelief, called Auxier's office to confirm it. The attorney said that police had found the body and were looking for the girls.

"If the police come to the house, tell them they have to go through me," Auxier said.

Toni hadn't made any contact with the attorney. She was too scared to tell her parents, no less another adult. She was just frantic. Carl and Gloria really had trouble calming her down. Finally, Toni said she wanted to tell her parents, but she needed someone there with her. The Rippeys agreed to accompany her to the Lawrence house and remain present as she made her confession.

"Toni explains to her mother and father what had happened. Her mother almost passes out, and her father says to Toni, 'Get the hell out of my house!' "Carl recalls. "We tried to calm him down and give her mother some support."

That same afternoon, over at the Loveless residence, Marjorie had returned from work, only to find Melinda and Laurie hanging out in her living room. Melinda asked her mom for hugs and kisses, whispering that Laurie was going to spend the night. Marjorie didn't approve of Laurie, and she told Melinda that Laurie could not stay. But Melinda was adamant about it.

"She has to! She has to stay," Melinda begged. "She had a big fight with her family."

Marjorie eventually gave in.

All day, Marjorie noticed that Melinda was acting strange. Melinda was in hiding. She was locked up in her room with Laurie and Crystal for hours. When Marjorie would call her downstairs, Laurie would call for Melinda to come back up. The three of them were sticking close together. Before bedtime, Marjorie checked on the girls.
